well, it could have been worse. A bot who uses smilies can't be all evil ;)

Sorry that I didn't see to it earlier. I've been afk since monday due to a pinched nerve that left my whole right arm totally numb. Thanks to my physiotherapist I can type again :)
I'll re-lock the registration tomorrow.

Much better, thanks :) The arm still goes numb now and then but at least it doesn't stay like that for more than a few minutes now.

Btw, my doc says the root of the whole problem is that my chest muscles are too strong and keep pulling my shoulders forward which leads to the nerve being pulled between the vertebra and getting squeezed there. He suggests that I strengthen the muscles in my shoulders and upper back in order to take balance that out.

What exercises would you guys recommend in order to strengthen the Trapezius and both Rhomboids? It should be something I can do at home as there is no gym in my town. (Here in the country, people get enough muscles by doing farmwork so that there's no demand for a gym).

LOL those pink ones could be lifted by any decent-sized fly.
I used to have pretty good ones (steel, 22 lbs each) but I sold them when I moved.
The prob about weights is that they are more for the chest and lower back muscles while the muscles in the upper back have comperatively little to do.
A colleague with a very stubborn cow suggested cattle pushing. I already started training last Thursday by pushing the car another colleague drove into a mud pool up to the axles. (And of course of all our business cars cars it had to be the biggest one: a VW bus)

Currently I do a little dictionary balancing (Collins' English/German, 1800 pages, 8 lbs) - excellent for the neck muscles but lethal for any toes or keyboards that get into the way when the book decides to prove Newton's first law of gravitation...

Would that not depend on how yo use them? There's many different exercises one can do with small eights like that...

Tomorrow is my next session with the physiotherapist. Maybe she can suggest a few exercises

She suggests turning the head and upper body from one side to the other, as far as possible, with the arms stretched out and holding for about 5 seconds at the maximum torsion. Sounds harmless but is surprisingly straining.

actually, that's an old prejudice and as true as the one about spinach and iron (which turned out to be a misplaced decimal point)

By stretching a muscle you make it harder for it to contract. And the contraction is what makes strength.
The muscles shouldn't be cold, though, as that'd raise the risk of injuries. A short warm up is good, but you shouldn't exaggerate it. Besides, professional sportspersons will confirm that there is such a thing as overtraining. If you exercise too much, your results don't improve anymore but get a lot worse. You have to pause then, for a day or two.

Here's an article written for kids which explains it in terms that a non-medic can understand: http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/artic ... ature1.asp

try running them with just a slow and moderate warmup. (No stretching but pressing motions, rather.) You'll run those 3 miles at least 20 secs faster.
I used to run the 400 meters and without stretching I was always 3-5 secs faster.

It's because of the velcro-principle muscles use. Every muscle fiber consists of a microscopically small hook system. These hooks get entwined when you contract the muscle. By stretching the muscle, you pull these little hooks so far apart that they can not get into full contact again. As a result, the muscle can not contract as much as a non-stretched one. Thus, a stretched muscle can apply less strength.

It's difficult to explain without pics. Imagine it like a velcro-band that doesn't overlap 100% but only 25% at its ends - it'll be longer and less strong.

The mechanism of muscular contraction is nicely explained in Wikipedia (alas, with German graphics) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscle_contraction

I can understand that, but isn't it sometimes better to try out new things? Else the Marine 'd still use sails (which 'd be a bit difficult to use on submarines... :bigass: )
