that's a deliberate bug, caused by me locking the registration (I announced that a few months ago, btw). It keeps us safe from spammers.
Unfortunately, registering and editing your profile require the same file. Therefore you are unable to edit your profile while the registration is locked. If you let me know by which time you'll be online, I'll unlock the registration and lock it again after you're done.

I'm sorry about the inconvenience but I saw no other way to lock out the 50+ spammers per day as long as we don't get the upgrade to phpBB3.0.5 *sigh*

That IS rather inconvenient. I made a Halloween version of my AV and was hoping to have it up until November.

But it may not be worth all that bother...

Naah, no prob. I unlocked the registration and shall lock it again tomorrow. Fortunately we still have this hack that allows an Admin to delete 15 spammers at once :)
(*makes mental note to send the author of that hack a huge load of Christmas cookies)

This is true. But then again, I can't say I blame Blue Bra either. I don't want to spend half my day deleting bot accounts...

It's still open, please go ahead and edit :)

The prob is phpBB2's file structure. Creating and editing a profile takes the same file. So if you lock one function, automatically the other one is locked as well.

The lack of constant bot invasions requiring a profile lockdown had something to do with it, I'm sure.

no smilie upload (unless you do it manually)..

phpBB3 is nice but still too new.
Btw, registration and profile editing still use the same file with phpBB3. It just has a better bot-filter which keeps most of them from registering.

I can keep human spammers away by creating a loop that sends them back to the index when they click "register" or hit the coppa link. The prob with the bots is that they skip those two steps and target the user profile file directly. There they enter their data and trick the board into believing that they completed the previous steps and that everything is ok.
If only I knew how they do that, I could patch that security gap up. I am not good yet at editing a phpBB3, but I have been using phpBB2s for 8 years and know every single code line well enough to edit them without crashing the board.

only if we switch to phpBB3. As long as we are with 2 we'll get spammed to death the moment we unlock the registration. Unfortunately, in this software the registration and profile editing are 2 functions of the very same file
